Sunderland continue their fine run of form in the Premier League with statement win over Bournemouth

Newly promoted sides hardly stay up in the Premier League but this narrative is being corrected by Sunderland.

After their win against Bournemouth, Sunderland now sit 4th on the Premier League table.

Their position in the top 4 may not last through matchday 13 as several other teams behind them can overtake but with 23 points already, there is hope for Sunderland to stay in the Premier League.

The three sides that were relegated last season – Leicester, Ipswich Town, and Southampton – had 25, 22, and 12 points respectively. Before the end of December, Sunderland could have well cleared out the previous point margin.

But it is not about the points they have accumulated that makes us think they can stay in the Premier League but rather the way they approach games.

After 13 games played in the Premier League including a win over Chelsea, most recently Bournemouth, Nottingham Forest, and a comeback football draw against Arsenal, Sunderland are poised to stay in the Premier League.

The statement of Sunderland’s desire to stay in the Prem was made from the business done during the summer transfer window of 2025.

The club spent about €138 million on new players which is a record for a promoted team. And frankly, that move is paying off. Because while Sunderland have been dancing around the top 4 in the league, fellow promoted sides – Burnley and Leeds United – have stayed in the drop zone only above Wolves.

Watching Sunderland proves determination. Led by the experienced Granit Xhaka, the former Arsenal and Bayer Leverkusen man has continued to show what class he has.

Brian Brobbey may not be the starting point man but after grabbing the equalizer versus Arsenal and the winning goal to complete the comeback versus Bournemouth, he is not one to overlook.

There is hunger among the players and you can tell that this is a team destined to spend some time in the Prem.

Going into December, Sunderland have serious tests ahead of them.

Their next two games are away to Liverpool and Manchester City. Liverpool may not be in good form with 6 losses in the Prem and 2 in the Champions League and it does not help that they do not have a flawless record when playing against newly promoted sides.

Manchester City could still be shaky coming into this campaign but having dispatched Leeds for all the fight The Whites put up, Sunderland could be another victim of the quality that Pep Guardiola’s side have.

We wait to see how long this good run of form would last and if they can stay up in the Premier League.

Historically, there is cause to believe that once a team gets 40 points, they could be safe to stay in the Premier League and Sunderland looks like a team that could do that.
