100percentsurewins! Retrospective: See how Chelsea’s 2025 went, the world champions.

Even in an inconsistent year, the London club established itself as the “champion of everything.”

Chelsea’s 2025 season was marked by triumphs, inconsistencies, and millions spent in the transfer window. Under Enzo Maresca’s leadership, in his first full year in charge, the Blues made history by becoming the first club to win everything they’ve ever competed for, after winning the Conference League and the Club World Cup. However, inconsistent results, especially on English soil, plagued the Stamford Bridge club. Therefore,  100percentsurewins!  revisits the year of highs and lows for the current world champions.

Decline in the Premier League

After an inconsistent December, in which Chelsea fell out of contention for the title, the team continued its erratic performance at the start of 2025. In the first eight rounds of the Premier League that year, the team managed only three wins, with three losses and one draw. In the table, they dropped from fourth to fifth place, and even reached seventh place near the end of February. Furthermore, they were eliminated from the FA Cup after a 2-1 defeat to Brighton in the fourth round.

Recovery and title

In their last game of February, Chelsea hosted bottom-of-the-table Southampton and won 4-0, with a great collective performance. Following this result, Enzo Maresca’s team regained momentum in the Premier League, aiming for a direct Champions League spot. One of the team’s most important victories was against Fulham, away from home, in the 33rd round, when they managed to turn the game around with a goal from Pedro Neto in the 48th minute of the second half, keeping the team within the top five of the competition.

Meanwhile, Chelsea continued in the Conference League, a competition in which they used reserve players for most of the tournament. In the round of 16, they eliminated Copenhagen 3-1 on aggregate, in the quarterfinals they beat Legia Warsaw 4-2 on aggregate, and in the semifinals they overcame Djurgården 5-1 on aggregate. In the final, the Blues faced Real Betis.

Back in the Premier League after six wins in 10 games, including a 3-1 victory over already crowned champions Liverpool, Chelsea took to the field for the final round against Nottingham Forest in a direct duel for a Champions League spot. In the match, Levi Colwill scored the winning goal for the Blues, securing fourth place and a Champions League spot.

In the Conference League final, Real Betis took the lead early, with a goal from Abde Ezzalzouli just 10 minutes into the game. At halftime, Maresca made a change, bringing on Reece James in place of Malo Gusto. After the substitution, Chelsea dominated the game and, with goals from Enzo Fernández, Nicolas Jackson, Moisés Caicedo, and Jadon Sancho, and a brilliant performance from Cole Palmer, turned the game around to win 4-1 and become Conference League champions for the first time.

With this victory, Chelsea became the first team to win all UEFA titles (Champions League, Europa League, Conference League, UEFA Super Cup, UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup).

🌍 Conquering the world

In June, Chelsea landed in the United States to compete in the FIFA Club World Cup, which they qualified for after winning the Champions League in 2021. Before the tournament, the club had announced the signing of striker Liam Delap from Ipswich Town for 35 million euros.

In Group D, the Blues debuted with a 2-0 victory over LAFC. However, they came from behind to lose 3-1 to Flamengo in a poor second-half performance, especially from Nicolas Jackson, who came on after Flamengo’s second goal and was sent off after a hard tackle on Ayrton Lucas. In the final round, with their reserves, they beat Esperance 3-0 and qualified in second place.

In the round of 16, Chelsea faced Benfica and were winning 1-0, with a free-kick goal by Reece James, until the match was interrupted due to a lightning strike near Bank of America Stadium in North Carolina, 40 minutes into the second half. After almost two hours, the match resumed and, under pressure from the Portuguese side, Malo Gusto conceded a penalty, allowing Benfica to equalize through Di Maria. However, in extra time, Chelsea scored through Christopher Nkunku, Pedro Neto, and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall to win 4-1.

With the victory, Enzo Maresca’s team advanced to the quarterfinals to face Palmeiras. However, before the game, the club announced the signing of João Pedro, a striker from Brighton, for 63 million euros, making him available for the match against Palmeiras. Without Caicedo, suspended due to yellow cards, Chelsea opened the scoring early in the game with a great goal from Cole Palmer. In the second half, Estêvão, a future Chelsea player, equalized. But, near stoppage time, Weverton scored an own goal, giving the English team a 2-1 victory.

In the semi-final, Chelsea faced Fluminense and, with two spectacular goals from João Pedro, a former player for the Rio de Janeiro club, the Londoners advanced to the grand final against PSG.

In New Jersey, PSG and Chelsea took to the field in search of becoming the first champion of the competition. In the first half, Cole Palmer broke his scoring drought, and with two goals and an assist for João Pedro, also in the first half, the Blues opened up a 3-0 lead and secured the title. The French team tried to react in the second half, but couldn’t find the net. Thus, Chelsea were crowned world champions.

With this title, Chelsea cemented its status as the only team to have won everything it has ever competed for (Premier League, FA Cup, League Cup, Community Shield, Champions League, Europa League, Conference League, UEFA Super Cup, Cup Winners’ Cup, FIFA Club World Cup and FIFA Club World Cup).

➡️ New season

In addition to the signings announced during the World Cup, Chelsea also acquired Jamie Gittens from Borussia Dortmund (55 million euros), Alejandro Garnacho from Manchester United (45 million euros), Jorel Hato from Ajax (44 million euros), and also the arrival of Estêvão from Palmeiras for 45 million euros.

In terms of departures, the Blues negotiated the transfer of 25 players, including both transfers and loans. The most notable were Noni Madueke’s move to Arsenal for 55 million euros, Christopher Nkunku’s move to Milan for 37 million euros, and the controversial move of Nicolas Jackson to Bayern Munich.

On the pitch, Chelsea had a positive start to the Premier League, with two wins and two draws. In the Champions League, they debuted with a 3-1 defeat to Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena. After September, they returned to having inconsistent results against Manchester United, Brighton and Sunderland, with expulsions in two of those games.

The squad also suffered from injuries, mainly to Cole Palmer and Levi Colwill. Even so, the Brazilians João Pedro and Estêvão, as well as Reece James and Moisés Caicedo, continued in great form and, after important victories against Liverpool, Tottenham and Nottingham Forest, Chelsea recovered and, in November, occupied second place before the match against the leader Arsenal, on the last day of the month.

In the Champions League, the Blues also recovered, with victories over Benfica, Ajax and a great 3-0 win over Barcelona at home. In the League Cup, they beat Wolves and Lincoln City before December.

📉 New bad phase

Just like in recent seasons, Chelsea experienced poor results again in December. After drawing with Arsenal and missing the chance to close the gap on their rivals at the top of the table, the team only managed six points out of a possible 18 in the Premier League, dropping from second to fifth place, 15 points behind the leaders, who remain Arsenal. In the Champions League, they lost to Atalanta 2-1, after leading, and are currently in 13th place. In the League Cup, however, they beat Cardiff City 3-1 and will face Arsenal in the semi-finals.
