Dalot: “I would trade the goal for the three points without a second thought.”
The Portuguese player scored his first goal of the season, yet Manchester United still slipped up at home.
Diogo Dalot scored the first goal of the season . However, Manchester United slipped up at home against Nuno Espírito Santo’s West Ham. Critical of his team’s performance, the Portuguese international admitted some carelessness on the part of the “Red Devils”.
“I’m disappointed. With a 1-0 lead and 30 minutes to go, I think we need to control the game much more. Especially at Old Trafford. We can’t be as anxious as we were after the goal. Maybe we were a little careless with possession. Obviously, I’m disappointed with the draw. We had the game in our hands,” he began in a flash interview with Sky Sports.
The full-back analyzed the play that led to the goal. According to Dalot, after the goal, United should have continued the momentum. Something that didn’t happen with Ruben Amorim’s team.
“It’s the solution we need to find. It could be several things. It shouldn’t be like this, because we fought for 60 minutes to score a goal and, when that happens, we should continue doing the same things, control even more, maintain possession of the ball for longer so that we can be dominant,” he said.
Dalot also offered an opinion on the defensive performance. The Portuguese coach asserted that the team was aware of the opponent’s strengths, yet they were unable to prevent the equalizing goal.
“Especially the play that led to the corner we conceded. That’s the type of play we need to avoid, especially against teams that are good on the counterattack. We knew they would look for counterattacks and set pieces, and unfortunately, we couldn’t hold onto the result. In the end, we have to look at ourselves; I think the blame lies more with us than with West Ham,” he added.
Regarding the goal he scored, his first of the season after 13 games, the Portuguese player highlighted the “fantastic” feeling. However, he assured that he would easily trade the goal for a victory.
“It’s a fantastic feeling. Whenever you have the opportunity to score for a club like this, it’s incredible, especially at Old Trafford. But, in the end, the feeling isn’t the same; I would trade the goal for the three points without a second thought. But I’m happy to help the team in any way, whether it’s with a goal or whatever. But this kind of result gives us something to think about. We can’t be winning at home with 30 minutes to go and not control the game,” he concluded.
