The striker has been training along the sidelines of the Monaco squad and hasn’t received minutes since February.
Gelson Martins’ state of grace at Monaco seems to be over. In the Principality team since 2018, when he arrived on a season-long loan from Atlético Madrid – he would sign a five-year contract with the French side at the end of that period – the international striker Portuguese is currently away from the squad coached by Austrian Adi Hütter.
According to ‘FootMercato’, the 28-year-old is keeping fit at the club, despite training apart from the first team, for which he has not played an official game since February 26. That day, he entered the field to play the final nine minutes of Monaco-Nice, a match counting for round 25 of the French League that ended with a 3-0 defeat for the Monegasques.
The same source also informs that, although Gelson Martins has a contract with Monaco until June next year, the club does not intend to put any kind of obstacle to the player’s departure, who is considering returning to Portugal in the January transfer market. A possible move into Saudi football is also on the table, adds ‘FootMercato’.
Trained at Sporting, Gelson Martins has a Cândido de Oliveira Super Cup (2015), a Portuguese League Cup (2017/18), and a European Super Cup (2018) with Atlético Madrid.
