Sebastián Coates, former Sporting captain, was crowned champion of the Uruguayan League. Returning to Nacional, the club where he began his career, the 35-year-old defender is having a dream season.
The player, it should be remembered, returned to his home country in 2024.
After defeating Peñarol in the Super Cup, Nacional once again triumphed over their eternal rivals in the league final. For the first time, the champion was decided through a play-off.
In the two-legged final, the first game ended in a draw (2-2). This Sunday, the second leg was played, and Nacional secured the title in extra time after a goalless draw in regulation time.
Nigerian Christian Eberle was the hero and scored the winning goal (114m). Earlier, Coates could have been the star, but his goal was disallowed for offside (94m).
With this victory, Coates contributed to Nacional’s 50th league title, his fourth personal title. The former Sporting player therefore finished the season in style.
