Understand how TV rights must be approved for distribution.

The clubs gathered this Thursday at the Presidents’ Summit, in the headquarters building of Liga Portugal, and discussed Reinaldo Teixeira‘s proposal for the division of television rights revenue, a proposal that had already been approved previously by the group that makes up the Centralization League.

This proposed distribution begins by dividing the revenue after the centralization of rights, with 90 percent going to the Liga and the remaining 10 percent to the II Liga.

The total revenue that remains for the League clubs will then be divided into five installments:

• 32.5 percent of that total will be divided equally among the 18 clubs.
• 44.2 percent will be divided among the 18 clubs according to their sporting performance.
• 14.3 percent will be divided according to criteria of magnitude and social impact.
• 5 percent will be divided according to the quality of the club’s infrastructure.
• 4 percent will be divided according to the conditions given for the quality of the television broadcast.

This was the revenue distribution model presented by Liga Portugal, which was left open for discussion. Most clubs, including the big ones, support this division, with only a small group of smaller clubs believing that the percentage divided equally among all should be more than just 32.5 percent.

It is certain that Liga Portugal presented this key and opened the floor for discussion. For the next two or three months, the organization will maintain a diplomatic stance, available to listen to all contributions from the clubs.

After that, the final proposal will be completed, which will have to be approved at the League’s General Assembly to be held in the first quarter of 2026 .

In any case, if any club disagrees with this revenue distribution key, it can, itself, draw up a proposal and present it to the General Assembly.

However, according to what we have been able to ascertain, it is highly unlikely that this agreement, with these percentages for dividing the total revenue, will not be approved, since the majority of clubs have expressed their agreement with it. 

It is certain that the final key will be approved at the General Assembly in the first quarter of 2026 : Liga Portugal is in a hurry to anticipate all these steps, in order to go to the market to negotiate the centralized rights as quickly as possible. This is because, when Reinaldo Teixeira arrived at the League, the centralization process was far behind schedule.
