Liverpool embarrassed themselves in the Champions League on Wednesday, losing 4-1 to PSV Eindhoven at home. The Reds are in a deepening crisis. Manager Arne Slot’s job is increasingly under threat. Despite this, the Dutchman is trying to find the positives. He surprised journalists at his post-match press conference. “I want to praise the players for their reaction after we conceded a goal to make it 1-0. We played well until halftime,” he said.
Liverpool started the season strongly, recording five league wins in a row. But by the end of September, they had fallen into a slump they couldn’t overcome, and the situation is getting worse. In the last two months, the Reds have lost nine of their 12 matches. During that time, they suffered two defeats to Crystal Palace, Chelsea, Manchester United, Galatasaray Istanbul, Brentford, Manchester City, Nottingham Forest, and yesterday, PSV Eindhoven.
Liverpool manager sees positives after another heavy defeat
This season, Arne Slot wants to implement new tactical solutions to surprise his opponents, but so far, it hasn’t translated into results. Liverpool is struggling more and more with each match. They struggle to create chances, and when they do create them, they struggle to finish them. Their intensity is also dropping. All of this is taking its toll on the reigning English champions.
It’s hard to find any positives in Liverpool’s play, with each new major player becoming increasingly disappointing. Players signed in the summer are struggling to settle in, and Arne Slot can’t seem to adapt them to his tactics. Only the signing of Hugo Ekitike stands out at the moment.
Journalists were surprised when the Reds coach stated that there were positive aspects to the game in the clash with PSV (1:4).
“I want to praise the players for their reaction after we conceded 1-0. It was the reaction I expected, and it’s not easy when you’ve lost 3-0 in the previous match and then concede a goal so quickly in the next one. We played well until halftime. Our mental attitude was what you would expect. We didn’t give up and came close to equalizing the score at 2-2,” he said at a press conference.
Slot’s job at Liverpool is in jeopardy. After the match against Nottingham, there were chants that he would be sacked the next day. But he himself isn’t considering the possibility of being sacked. He surprised journalists after the match against PSV.
“I’m not worried about my position. I’m focusing on other things. I’m trying to analyze and help the players. It’s obvious I’m not doing it as well as I was last season. Individual mistakes are the result of a team effort. I need to work better; that’s what I’m focusing on,” said the Dutchman.
He also mentioned the board’s trust. “I think my position is secure. This isn’t the first time in my career that I’ve had a difficult moment. I feel support from above, but I also understand that if the team isn’t doing well, these kinds of questions will arise. We talk to the board often. We did it last season when we were winning, and we’re doing the same this time. Of course, it’s not like they’re calling me all the time and telling me they trust me. We have completely normal conversations,” he added.
However, he realizes that the number of defeats and the manner in which they occurred can be frightening. “It’s a shock for all of us. It’s not what we expected, considering the quality we have. The only solution is to overcome these problems. We simply have to face where we are and work really hard,” he concluded.
Liverpool’s next match is on Sunday, away against West Ham United.
