With each passing week, the chances of Legia Warsaw winning the Polish championship or qualifying for European competition in the 2026/27 season diminish. It’s also unclear who will replace Edward Iordanescu permanently. Legia.net suggests that the lack of European competition in the new season will mean a sell-off. “Let’s hope this delay doesn’t cost Legia too much,” we read.
Legia Warsaw hasn’t had the best results this season. The capital club has already been eliminated from the Polish Cup, sits eleventh in the Ekstraklasa table (12 points behind leaders Górnik Zabrze), and has three points after three matches in the Conference League. At the end of October, Legia ended their contract with Edward Iordanescu, and Inaki Astiz was appointed his temporary replacement. It’s difficult to predict which direction Legia will take in the coming weeks and months.
Legia is on the verge of disaster. “Nobody’s talking about the championship today.”
Legia.net describes the current situation at Legia regarding the search for a new coach. For now, it’s certain that Astiz will lead the team in the final round of matches in 2025, but it’s unclear whether the Spaniard will continue in this role until the end of the autumn season. A new coach has not yet been chosen, and numerous candidates are appearing in the media.
“Let’s hope this tardiness doesn’t cost Legia too much. In order to win the Polish championship on the club’s 110th anniversary, the club spent a lot of money on transfers and increased the wage budget three months ago, claiming that losing would be disastrous. Today, no one is talking about the championship, and looking at the table, one can seriously fear whether the team will qualify for European competitions. Failure to do so next season could result in the sale of some players,” we read.
“The situation is irritating fans who would like to receive information – even if only that a coach has been chosen – but they will have to wait for him, as he is currently unavailable. This is the third such situation this year where the club has been looking for a person for one of the key positions for quite a long time,” the source added.
These are the candidates for the Legia Warsaw job. From wall to wall.
Which coaches are being considered for the Legia Warsaw job? Previously, rumors swirled about Nenad Bjelica and Aleksandar Vukovic (both without clubs), but the list is constantly growing. The “Ofensywni” podcast on “Przegląd Sportowy Onet” suggested candidates include Maciej Skorża (Urawa Red Diamonds), Marek Papszun (Raków Częstochowa), Jacek Magiera (Polish national team), Urs Fischer, and Raphael Vicky (both without clubs).
It is also worth adding that Legia spent nearly six million euros on transfers (according to Transfermarkt calculations), and the most expensive transfer was Mileta Rajović from Watford, for whom three million euros were paid.
What words about Legia? “House of Cards. What matters is the struggle for power.”
Łukasz Olkowicz’s articles on Legia Warsaw’s activities appear in Onet’s Przegląd Sportowy. The published materials contain many powerful quotes.
“There are no relationships at the club today. Edi Iordanescu spoke of the Legia Family. Only it’s not a family at all. It’s closer to what Kosta Runjaić observed: Legia is a House of Cards. Those who want to change something are considered troublemakers at Legia: dangerous and unnecessary. What matters is the fight for power and survival. And to survive, you have to know which way the wind is blowing,” says one former Legia employee.
“Some people just want to be at this club because Legia offers a good life: a good salary, nice clothes and shoes, trips around Europe, and they even serve you food at LTC. Championship? The most important thing is to get into European competitions,” the source adds.
