José Sousa, an 18-year-old who played for Vasco da Gama in Fátima, was found dead by the roadside in circumstances that are still being investigated, according to a statement released by the club on social media.
The young man was reported missing on the morning of November 27th, after his family had searched for him throughout the night. The young player’s body was eventually found, lying in a field off the road in Tourões, in the municipality of Porto de Mós, on the route José Sousa usually took on his way home. Initial indications point to a motorcycle accident.
“Today, someone who marked every day he lived with us passed away. Still a Junior athlete, José arrived at our club in September and, since then, showed what many take years to achieve: hard work, dedication, humility, and leadership,” wrote the Vasco da Gama Sports, Recreation and Cultural Association in a Facebook post.
“He left unexpectedly, while returning home, leaving a void impossible to fill. But he also leaves behind an enormous legacy! The way he trained, the way he competed, the way he inspired those around him. Zé will always be remembered not only as a player, but as a member of our family!”, writes the association where the young man played.
The family indicated, however, that the funeral services are scheduled for this Saturday at the Church of São Vicente Aljubarrota.
