Ruben Amorim spoke out this Friday ahead of the match against Crystal Palace with a firm statement: there are no excuses, neither for the recent form nor for the European campaign. The Manchester United manager acknowledged his frustration over the points lost, but guaranteed that the team must react in the next game.
“In our club, there are no excuses. Last year we had to win every time, and this year is the same. If you look at the games, we should have more points because we had the advantage and control in several matches. Losing that control is very frustrating, especially the last game,” he admitted.
Amorim described the last few days as emotionally demanding, but believes that this is part of the demands placed on the Red Devils .
“It was a very tough week, as it should be after a defeat. But we have to start again. The process continues, everything can change very quickly in this league. Now it’s time to focus on the next game,” he said.
When questioned about potential nervousness within the group, the coach acknowledged that the team needs to handle the pressure.
“We need to feel the urgency to win. We know what happens at the club when we don’t win. We can play better, and we should have won that game. We can’t change it, but we can focus on the next one,” said the Portuguese coach.
Regarding injuries in the Red Devils squad , Ruben Amorim confirmed that Matheus Cunha may be close to returning, while forward Sesko and defender Maguire will not be back on the pitch anytime soon.
“Sesko will need more time, Harry [Maguire] too. I hope to have Matheus in the next game, but not in this one,” Amorim confirmed.
Manchester United have been experiencing more problems in away games, something the 40-year-old manager wants to correct quickly.
“We need to show the players why we lost control against Forest or Tottenham. We were in a position to win those games. Small details change everything. At home the intensity is higher, and I felt that in the last game it wasn’t at the same level,” he said, also refuting any comparison with Crystal Palace, their next opponent.
“We play differently. It’s a different club, at a different moment, and they’re doing things better than us. But you can’t say that all 4-3-3 formations are the same. We defend in different spaces and attack differently.”
The coach also spoke about the wings and the need to adjust the players’ profiles to the demands of the system, recalling the last game in which Man. United lost to Everton 1-0.
“We need time to improve the team’s characteristics. In the last game, against ten men, we should have had more quality to switch the play to the other side with the right foot. We’re not yet the perfect fit to play this way, but with time we’ll get there.”
