Buenos Aires (Argentina) – The WTA 125 tournament series in South America continues to yield good results for Laura Pigossi. After winning a title in Cali, Colombia, the Brazilian also became champion in Buenos Aires. Pigossi and the Spaniard Alicia Herrero are the top seeds and on Saturday defeated the Argentinian Nicole Fossa Huergo and the 17-year-old Czech Laura Samson 6-2, 7-6 (7-5).
The week’s champions receive 125 points in the WTA doubles ranking and split the US$6,000 prize money. Pigossi, 31, an Olympic medalist in doubles at Tokyo alongside Luisa Stefani, will achieve her best career ranking, reaching 80th position in the WTA. She has reached at least the semifinals in the last six doubles tournaments she has played.
In singles, Pigossi was already champion in Buenos Aires in the 2023 season. The 31-year-old from São Paulo, ranked number 2 in Brazil, is currently 194th in the world and had fallen in the first round this year, defeated by the American Varvara Lepchenko. She is also registered to play in Quito next week.
The first set of the doubles final was dominated by Pigossi and Herrero, who managed two service breaks and escaped both break points they faced. Coming from a semifinal where they saved two match points last Friday, the Brazilian and the Spaniard showed their ability to react again in the second set. They were losing 5-1, but they broke back twice and closed out the set and the match in a tiebreak.
