Pros Are Betting Atlanta – Here’s 5 Reason Why the Line Is Moving

How the professionals are betting the game:

New Orleans was -3.5 on the look ahead line before teams played last week. Atlanta debuted their refreshed offense with Michael Penix, and blew out the Packers.

New Orleans blew a late lead against the Raiders, and lose outright. The market reopened one week ago New Orleans -2.5, adjusted through the key number of 3. During the week, two professional groups bet Atlanta +2.5 and the number is now as low as New Orleans -1.

5 keys to know for the matchup:

  1. Chris Olave has 375 receiving yards through three games, and the Atlanta secondary is allowing an average of 157.5 yards per game to outside wide receivers. The group of Falcons defensive backs has looked specifically vulnerable since losing their top cornerback AJ Terrell to injury. This has forced Atlanta into playing more Cover 3 and 4 looks, against which Olave averages an elite 3.53 yards per route run.
  2. Tyler Shough has thrown for 917 yards and 8 touchdowns through three weeks as Saints head coach and play caller Kellen Moore continues to push tempo and aggression. Two of his three games were in tough road environments. Bettors should expect the same to continue tonight. Atlanta has been significantly better against the run than the pass and the Saints are fourth in pass rate over expectation, and is running plays at the second quickest time in the league between snaps.
  3. Michael Penix Jr. completely changes the Falcons’ offensive outlook and gets an ideal schematic matchup. Atlanta scored just 16 combined points in its first two games with Cooper Rush, who averaged only 4.6 yards per pass play with four interceptions. With Penix last week, Atlanta erupted for 500 yards and 35 points, while Penix averaged 10.2 yards per pass play. More importantly for Monday: New Orleans plays Cover 3/6 on 74% of its defensive snaps, and Penix went 8-for-10 for 15.3 yards per attempt against those coverages in his debut.
  4. Atlanta may be the better team, yet they’re still getting points. Market ratings have Atlanta 2 points better than New Orleans and estimates the true line at Saints -0.5, compared with the current Saints -1.5. The supporting metrics are compelling: Atlanta’s defense ranks 9th in EPA/play and 6th in success rate, compared with 23rd and 30th for New Orleans. A lot of this line having New Orleans favored is due to the extreme home field advantage baked into this matchup with the 20th anniversary of the “Dome Coming”.
  5. New Orleans may be better than they look on defense. Through three weeks, New Orleans has a defensive success rate of 50.5% which ranks 31st in the league. However, the Saints have faced the Lions (Jared Goff), Baltimore (Lamar Jackson) and Las Vegas (Kirk Cousins). These three teams each rank inside the top 7 for offensive output through Week 4. This has been the most difficult opening schedule of opposing offenses for a team to face. As good as Atlanta looked in Week 3 against Green Bay with Penix back, this is the weakest offense New Orleans has played this season.
